Tips for picking your florist

Choosing the right florist for your wedding is crucial because flowers play a significant role in setting the atmosphere and aesthetic of your big day. Here are some key tips to help you pick the perfect wedding florist:

1. Determine Your Floral Budget

  • Set a clear budget for your flowers before meeting with florists. This will help your prospective florists understand what you are able to spend and then they can best advise you on how to get the most bang for your buck.

2. Know Your Wedding Style

  • Have a clear vision of your wedding theme and style and seek out florists who do work that aligns with that and that you love. Each florist will have their own style and vibe, this is a creative pursuit after all, so find someone who matches your vibe.

  • Browse photos of weddings and florals that resonate with you and bring these to consultations to better communicate your style. It's a huge help to also include images specifically from the florist who you are approaching as this shows you love their style but also will be a useful tool when starting to understand what things cost.

3. Research Florists Early

  • Start researching florists as soon as your venue and date is locked in. In demand florists can book up to 2 years in advance so don't delay if you have your heart set on someone. Look at portfolios on Instagram, Pinterest, and their websites to get a sense of their style. Read reviews and testimonials to get an idea of past clients' experiences.

4. Venue vendor lists

  • Most venues will have a suggested vendor list and while in some cases this can be super helpful, it's important to keep in mind that how people end up on those lists varies. Sometimes it is a genuine case of a vendor working at that venue a lot and the venue wanting to work with them more. Other times it can be a case of a vendor exchanging turning up at an open day for a spot on the list even if they don't work at that venue much so check tagged photos of the venue and dive deeper to make sure you're really getting the best suggestions.

5. Schedule Consultations

  • If you have your heart set on someone reach out to them with your vision and budget and if they're available on your date and things align schedule a consult with them to work through things and see if you're a fit for each other. Please keep in mind that some florists may charge a small fee for a consultation and specific quote and this is different from may other vendors as there is quite a lot of work required in quoting etc for florists as it's not a one-size service. Generally if you book them, this fee will then be credited towards your final balance so ultimately it won't cost you, it's just a way for florists to make sure their valuable time and expertise isn't wasted on couples who aren't serious about booking them.

6. Consider Seasonal Flowers

  • Florists who know which flowers are in season can often offer you better quality blooms at a lower cost. Ask about seasonal options and be open to their expert suggestions for alternatives if your preferred flowers aren’t available.

7. Your florist & your Venue

  • If a florist has worked at your venue before, it can be a bonus as they’ll be familiar with the space and how to decorate it best. If not, ask if they’ll need to do a walk-through of the venue etc before to give them all of the info they need to make their creativity, and your budget, shine.

8. The Proposal

  • Once you’ve spoken with a florist, they will provide a detailed proposal that outlines all the costs, including setup, breakdown, delivery fees, bump out and any additional charges. This will help you understand what is included.

9. Ensure Clear Communication

  • Choose a florist who communicates well and is responsive. Planning your wedding can be stressful, so having a vendor who is easy to reach and keeps you informed is important.

10. Trust Your Gut (and your florist)

  • At the end of the day, choose a florist that you feel comfortable with and trust to bring your vision to life. If you click with them and they understand your style, you’re more likely to be satisfied with the final results.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to find a florist who aligns with your vision, style, and budget for a beautiful wedding day.
